After waiting for the trails to recover from the spring snowmelt I was eager to get back up into the mountains. I returned to familiar trails to tackle Phelps since I had abandoned it on my last hike. While every season brings it's unique challenges for hiking, I had grown very used to the cool winter temperatures that I had climbed my last few peaks in and I was not prepared for how brutal the humidity was in early summer. This comparably easy hike had me exhausted by the end of it, but I was still thankful to be out on the trails. The summit of Phelps offered excellent views of Mount Colden which I knew was going to be next hike. I also met a 73 year old man at the summit who finished his 46 long ago and still makes time to get up into the mountains, I hope to have his energy when I reach that age! The cloudy skies made for some excellent lighting for photos at the summit and I am happy I was up there at the right time. The skies dropped quite a heavy downpour during my last couple miles but with how hot I was I welcomed the rain... this theme of unforecasted thunderstorms continued for the rest of this summer and I ended up in the rain frequently, but was never too bothered by it.
"Climbing these peaks is not just about reaching the summit; it's about the journey,
the challenge, and the deep connection to the mountains."
- Herbert Malec, First known ADK 46er
